Spectrum rules

The Authority has established spectrum rules to govern spectrum operators.  Broadly, these:

  • Require all spectrum operators to have a licence. There are two types of licences: frequency licences which allow a person to use a radio frequency, and station licences, which allow a person to install and use radio equipment.
  • Set the process for applying for spectrum licences.
  • List criteria that spectrum operators must meet in order to get a licence.
  • Give the Authority power to set terms and conditions of licences, and change these terms and conditions.
  • Require spectrum operators to pay licence fees every year.
  • Prevent spectrum operators from interfering with radio equipment and the services of other licence holders.
