We act in the long term interests of users of telecommunications services – the services that people use to communicate with each other, for example, mobile, internet and fixed line phone services. We work with the users of those services, and the firms that provide those services.
Our Objectives
Anything we do must be in line with our objectives, set out in the FSM Telecommunications Act of 2014, which, briefly, include:
- provide clear rules for telecommunications services firms that focus on promoting the long-term interests of users;
- promote entry of new firms to invest in and provide telecommunications services;
- encouraging competition between these firms for the purposes of providing better services, better access and better prices;
- encourage firms to spend money on telecommunications networks;
- ensure there are appropriate user rights and complaint processes; and
- make it easier for people in the FSM to access telecommunications services.
Supporting competition
We want to make sure that users are being provided good quality telecommunications services at the best price possible. Congress has determined that users will get better services and better prices by opening up the FSM to competition. Competition in this sense means two or more firms who compete against each other to win customers through the quality and prices of their service. An important part of our role is to establish rules that promote competition between firms and ensure the providers comply with those rules.
